LEE PATERSON, ESQ.; THE PIHRA FOUNDATION’S 2008 HONORARY “ROASTEE” Lee Paterson is a partner at Winston & Strawn, LLP’s Los Angeles office, and is head of the labor and employment relations practice group in that office. Winston & Strawn is a major sponsor of our May 17, 2008 “Roast” of Lee Paterson; and over the years, the firm has contributed thousands of dollars to the PIHRA Foundation’s “You & Your First Job” and scholarship programs. For decades, Lee Paterson has been a tremendous friend and advocate for PIHRA and the PIHRA Foundation. He has served as general counsel to PIHRA and the PIHRA Foundation, and California State Council of SHRM. His many contributions to our organizations have included:
• In 1991, Lee provided all the requisite legal assistance in the creation of the PIHRA Foundation. He filed for and received 501( c )3 (charitable, non-profit) status for the Foundation. He also wrote the Charter and By-Laws for the creation of the Foundation.
• Lee served as General Counsel to the PIHRA Foundation in its early years. Later, he asked his firm’s partner, Laura Petroff, to continue serving the Foundation in the role of General Counsel. Laura accepted the role, and continues to serve as our General Counsel today.
• Lee launched the “Silent Auction” at each year’s PIHRA Conference. The event was an immediate success, and continues to be the primary source of the Foundation’s funding each year. Lee continued to Co-Chair the Silent Auction for many years, and later, ensured that the Silent Auction would be strong into the future, by arranging for his life partner, Karen Jue, to Co-Chair the events.
• Lee has also served for many years as the General Counsel to PIHRA. For his services, Lee received an enormous compensation package of $1 per year! Over the years, he has updated the organization’s By-Laws; initiated the annual “Legal Update” programs (where he has also been a presenter for many years); created and provided general legal guidance via the “Legal Hotline” for PIHRA members; and wrote a monthly legal column in the PIHRAScope magazine.
At Winston & Strawn, Lee’s work concentrates on the representation of management in labor and employment relations matters. He has extensive experience in the litigation of labor and employment law matters, including class actions, wrongful discharge, and employment terminations. He recently represented the employee benefit plan before the United States Supreme Court in the case of Nord v. Black & Decker. Lee successfully argued the case, and the plan won on a 9-0 vote from the court.
He is admitted to practice in California and Hawaii, and before the U.S. District Court for the Southern, Northern, and Central Districts of California and the District of Hawaii; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth, Ninth, and D.C. Circuits; and before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Paterson received a B.A. and B.S. from Oregon State University in 1964 and a J.D. from the UCLA School of Law in 1967.
In 2007, Lee was honored in the peer rankings-based edition of The Best Lawyers in America for labor and employment law.
Mr. Paterson has written numerous books on a variety of employment and labor topics, including Employer's Compliance Review (Parker Publications, 1992), Sexual Harassment — What You Need to Know (Crisp Publications, 1992), California Unemployment Insurance Guide (Parker Publications, 1990), Negotiating Employee Resignations (Parker Publications, 1990), Supervisors Guide to Employee Performance Reviews (Parker Publications, 1990), Federal Workplace Posters (Parker Publications, 1989), and Supervisors Guide to Documenting Employee Discipline (Parker Publications, 1988). It was a wonderful event and all the recipients were excited to receive the scholarship awards. We look forward to have even more award winners in 2008. The PIHRA Foundation received a record number of inquiries about the scholarships this year and actually received applications from many qualified applicants. In addition to completing an application, the applicants provided an essay about their academic achievements and business goals and went through an extensive interview process with the selection committee.
This year’s scholarship recipients have demonstrated their commitment to their academic endeavors and their professional pursuits, as has been the tradition of other PIHRA Foundation Scholarship recipients since 1991.

A Short PIHRA Foundation History
The PIHRA Foundation was founded in 1991 as a result of the need to handle fund raising donations from PIHRA members on a tax exempt basis. Prior to that time, fund raising efforts to support Human Resource scholarships was handled through PIHRA without a tax advantage to the donor.
Since its inception, the PIHRA Foundation has provided over $100,000 worth of assistance to educate Human Resource professionals and those individuals entering the workforce.
Of that total: Over $52,000 funded HR college scholarships awarded to PIHRA members, Over $10,000 funded college scholarships to PIHRA members' sons and daughters in any discipline, Over $34,000 was used to develop and train high school students and those re-entering the workforce with the use of the
We also published "You and Your First Job" booklet and the "You and Your Next Job" booklet which have been donated to the vacational classes of scores of California secondary schools and junior colleges.

Anita Gorino and Phil Barquer Bill Groenekamp, current Foundation President Terry Kolasa tells a "Roger" story PIHRA Foundation Activities The Silent Auction at the annual PIHRA Professionals in HumanResources) conference in the Fall season (September or October) is one of our main fundraisers. Proceeds are used to fund scholarships for deserving college students who wish to make human resources a career choice. We also sponsor visits to local schools by HR practitioners and HR executives who use our publications to prepare high school and college students for their job searching and maintaining a healthy career.
School visits by HR professionals for vocational classes
One of the most significant activities of the foundation are the school visits from experienced human resources professionals who share their expertise with young adults. These selfless volunteers go into the community at the request of educators at high schools, vocational schools and community colleges all over Southern California.
During their visits, they teach students the basic skills of finding and keeping meaningful employment. They also emphasize the true keys to success on the job in order to motivate the students to get to work now to visualize and achieve their career goals. These professionals use the foundation's two publications, "You and Your First Job" and "You and Your Next Job" as a foundation for those talks.
