You and Your First Job

 

 

 

 

The You and Your First Job booklet has had a long and highly successful history which was highlighted when PIHRA won the prestigious Pinnacle Award from the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), a national HR organization. Excerpts from their statement about PIHRA include: "The chapter developed a comprehensive program to assist high school students entering the job market. The program revolves around..."You and Your First Job." The three part program involves a fund raising campaign to produce the more than 20,000 booklets that are distributed every year; a school liaison program to provide a speakers bureau to speak at high schools about job search and interviewing. The program has operated for more than 35 years and is welcomed throughout Southern California.

In 1997, the PIHRA Foundation reprinted 50,000 of the colorful Y&YFJ booklets which was updated the previous year with new student-approved text and graphics. The demand for the new booklet continues to be strong as the school visitation program expanses into Orange County, the San Fernando Valley and other areas.

Through an agreement with SHRM, Y&YFJ booklets are being published and used throughout the United States. The Scholarship Program attracts top students from local universities who have a commitment to enter the human resources field. Recipients are selected on a competitive basis by a committee of seasoned PIHRA members, some of whom are themselves part time university instructors.

You and Your Next Job

 

 

 

After eleven years of great success with Pinnacle Award winning "You and Your First Job", the Foundation has produced a new contribution for job seekers, a new booklet entitled, "You and Your Next Job." It is designed for workers interested in finding a new job. The intended audience could be people who have previously been in the labor market in some capacity and want to return to work. They could be students at two or four year colleges or universities, students at trade schools, immigrants, returnees from welfare, the military or those who have been incapacitated or out of the work force for any reason.

 

The concept of the new booklet has been discussed by the Board of Directors of the PIHRA Foundation for many years. The real momentum towards the completion of the project was the generous support of our partners in this venture. The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s office VTEA 1-B Work-Based Learning and the Career Development Statewide Advisory Committees funded the writing of the booklet.

 

Special kudos are extended to David Ratray, Chair of the Chancellor’s Statewide Advisory and Employment Services Committee. It was through his efforts in our behalf that a monetary grant was obtained for the writing of "You and Your Next Job." David initially made his contact with the Foundation when he asked Roger Sommer for 26,000 copies of "You and Your First Job". These booklets were distributed to ninth grade students in the vast Los Angeles Unified School District and were very well received. The Foundation heard many glowing comments from teachers in the LA District.

 

To add to David’s support, Rita Jones, co-chair of the Statewide Advisory Committee for Career Development supported the project and recommended Chris Pitchess who did an excellent job of writing of the booklet. The PIHRA Foundation thanks all of our newfound partners for their support for the new venture.

 

The PIHRA Foundation, for its part, is paying for the graphics and printing. In addition, the Foundation’s Board gave input to the writer of the booklets while Roger Sommer and Bill Groenekamp served as editors. Laura Petroff oversaw all the legal aspects of the project.

 

There are already many pre-publication requests for copies of "You and Your Next Job." Since the cover of the booklet is being designed as this article is going to press, a copy of the back cover is displayed on this page to give credits to those deserving it.
